The first secondment within Working Packages 4 (Troubled pasts) and 5 (Formal and informal teaching) has started. The picture shows Giovanna Leone, Denise Bentrovato, Charis Psaltis and Karel Van Nieuwenhuyse just having finished a guest lecture and accompanying debate with journalism grad students of La Sapienza University of Rome on the interplay between history-memory-politics-identities. Karel focused on changes in the aims of history teaching through time in Belgium and Charis on divided histories in the divided country of Cyprus and the work of civil society in overcoming this division.
The secondment of Denise and Karel with Giovanna focused on how to give shape to research and training model ideas on interactions among formal and informal history education practices. Building on its members’ previous research activities, this group selected as its specific case study the different ways in which difficult memories of colonial times have been coped with in different European countries (specifically Belgium and Italy), and how these coping strategies engaged with by descendants of colonizers could be put in dialogue with the points of view of descendants of colonized people. Based on museum visits in Rome and in-depth reflective debates, concrete ideas have been generated that will now be discussed among all members of Working Packages 4 and 5.
