Eddy Awouters – Flemish Association for Teachers of History and Cultural Sciences. Secondment in Madrid (2025/03/26 – 04/24)
#News
Basic aim of the secondment: to examine principles and strategies underlying good formal and informal history education practices which promote a critical, reflective and dialogical view, incl. regarding gender issues.
TOPICS (among others):
Evaluating historical thinking and historical awareness qualitatively.
Refining the museum tools for visitors (students), (which I worked out during my first secondment in DEUSTO in April 2024).
Monuments visits in Madrid, connected to its colonial past.
Museum visits: El Escorial; Imprenta Municipal, Artes del Libro; Museo Cerralbo; Museo de América; Museo Arqueológico Nacional; Museo de Historia de Madrid; Templo de Debod; Valle de los Caídos.
Developing a lesson about the comparison of the (de)colonization, between Belgium and Spain.
Commemoration: connecting to the project of Lindsay Gibson and Floor Van Alphen: search method of a collective memory activity that can be turned into a teaching activity.
Proposal to integrate World War I (1914-1918) into the Making Histories project, based on the film ‘The Salient’ (Luc Cuyvers, 2006). Educational material is provided.
Proposal to integrate the Korean War (1950 – 1953) into the Making Histories project with the support of The Korean War Legacy Foundation and EuroClio.
Argumentation: WWI and the Korean War are more relevant than ever, given the conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, Asia, and regions in Africa. Also, the availability of primary sources and visual material regarding these wars, is very large.
